Closure Notice

The University has a great responsibility to its students, faculty and staff when considering the return to full operations. We are ready and eager to provide the UVA community with fitness and recreational opportunities once the University is able to return to comprehensive operations safely and effectively. We are privileged to support this University and we believe in its greater mission. We're all in this together! If you have questions, please reach out to covidinformation@virginia.edu.

When we initially open, we will start with the fitness area at the AFC and the pool at NGRC. The hours and experience will be modified to ensure safety for students, members and staff. We will announce opening details as soon as possible.

In the meantime, please try some virtual programs.

Aquatics

Refresh your mind and body at Charlottesville's best indoor pools!

Aquatics

Swimming is one of the best activities you can do for your body. The low-impact resistance builds muscles and burns fat without damaging your joints. Your lungs become more efficient at transferring oxygen and you can gradually build your endurance. Whether you are just getting your feet wet or are an avid swimmer our IM-Rec Sports facilities can help you get the most out of this fantastic exercise.

Aquatic & Fitness Center Pool

Our Olympic size pool (50 meters x 25 yards) includes two movable bulkheads, which can divide the pool into two 8-lane by 25-yard pools with an open recreation area or reconfigured to an 8-lane 50-meter pool. There are two 1-meter springboards, two 3-meter springboards and 1-five meter dive platform for competition use.

All competition spectator seating is located on the observation deck that is accessible from the main lobby of the Aquatic & Fitness Center. We also have a basketball hoop for water basketball in the open recreation area. The pool is handicap accessible with an aquatic lift, and is kept at a comfortable workout temperature between 79-81 degrees.

Also located in the natatorium area is a shallow, warm water pool that is ideal for children of all ages. The temperature is kept at approximately 85 degrees and has a zero depth ramp for easy handicap access. A spacious, 16-person hot tub kept around 104 degrees and dry, co-ed sauna are perfect for adults to relax and regenerate after a workout.

North Grounds Pool

North Grounds Recreation Center features an indoor pool measuring 25 meter x 25 yard. It has 10 lanes ranging in depth from 3.5 feet to 7.5 feet. It is handicap accessible with an aquatic lift, and is kept at a comfortable temperature between 80–82 degrees. Also located in the aquatics space is an oversized, 104 degree hot tub, with 29 hydrotherapy jets and light therapy as well as a dry, co-ed sauna. The North Grounds aquatic area also provides a wet classroom for aquatic instruction.
