The University of Virginia Intramural-Recreational Sports Department is currently seeking well-rounded Sport Instructors to train small cohorts of youth and adults in activities such as tennis, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Most programs run for 1 hour.
Purpose: To provide an enjoyable and safe sporting experience for an assigned group of participants while they learn individual and team skills, sportsmanship, and fair play.
A Sport Instructor should familiarize trainees with pertinent sporting guidelines, diagnose and remedy form-related issues, and provide instruction on safe, effective sporting techniques. To ensure success as a Sport Instructor, you should exercise refined communication and coordination techniques. Invariably, a skilled Sport Instructor will foster persistence and respect among trainees.
Sport Instructor Responsibilities:
- Teaching sports-related rules and procedures.
- Developing and executing weekly lesson plans and/or training regiments.
- Analyzing gait, overall form, agility, and existing techniques.
- Safeguarding sport players from avoidable injuries by instilling appropriate techniques.
- Supervising the use of pertinent sporting equipment.
- Solidifying mental agility through coaching.
- Encouraging diligence, adherence to sporting guidelines, and sportsmanship.
Sport Instructor Requirements:
- Applicants must be at least 18+ years old.
- High school diploma.
- Previous instructional experience.
- Ability to engage children, students, and staff in a professional manner.
- A history of commendable sport participation.
- Well-honed sports-related diagnostic abilities.
- Polished verbal communication abilities.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience as a credible, hands-on Sports Instructor, preferably for youth.
Preferred License or Certification:
- Education: Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
- Virginia Driver’s License
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred but not required.
- Completion of an applicable instructor's training program is advantageous.

Position Compensation Range: $15.00 - $20.00 Hourly
