Ever wonder what it’s like to play an intramural sport? Win a championship? Well, I recently got to spend some time and talk to Jaymee Copenhaver, a first year student here at UVA who's a member of the intramural dorm league volleyball championship team.
Q: Why did you decide to play intramural volleyball? Did you have any previous experience with this sport?
I decided to play intramural volleyball because I had played volleyball all throughout high school and wanted to find a way to continue with that in college. It was a lot of fun to be a part of a sports team again and be able to hang out with my friends here.
Q: How did you form an intramural team?
One day my friends and I just got together and decided we wanted to form an intramural volleyball team. Some of us had actually played the sport before and others hadn’t so we knew it would be a lot of fun from the start!
Q: What did you enjoy most about your experience playing intramural sports?
I really enjoyed playing volleyball again and hanging out with my friends. I liked playing intramural sports because it was in a more casual setting and I didn’t feel pressured to win all the time.
Q: What was your funniest or most embarrassing moment from this season?
After one of our games, my teammates and I were playing around in the gym and I asked one of my friends to set the volleyball for me to hit. I ended up striking the ball really hard and it hit one of my teammates straight in the face. You could say it was pretty embarrassing [laughs].
Q: How does it feel to win an intramural championship?
It’s really fun and exciting! It is also fun to get to win something with my friends here that we can all share together. Plus I get to wear my intramural championship shirt with pride now! I actually wore it today [laughs].
Q: What would you suggest to those interested in playing an intramural sport?
I would definitely encourage anyone who wants to play an intramural sport to do so! It is really fun and there is no pressure at all. It also gives you the opportunity to learn a new sport while at UVA!
Q: Any tips on winning a championship?
I would suggest working together as a team from the beginning and having fun. If you have fun with it, you’ll do well!
