Club Sports have been established to promote and develop the interests and skills of their members in a particular sport. Clubs are athletic and recreational organizations that compete or perform with other universities and clubs throughout the country in local demonstrations, shows or contests. Some clubs are individually-oriented while others are more team-oriented.
Club members have the opportunity to become involved in the leadership and decision-making for their clubs. All club sports are student-governed by an elected slate of officers. Club sports are open to the beginner as well as the advanced performer. Club Sports funds are allocated by Student Council. Scholarships are not available for members. What are the differences between Varsity, Intramurals and Club Sports?
Varsity teams must follow NCAA and ACC rules and regulations. Practices and Games are mandatory and travel is required to play other universities. Some teams allow walk-on tryouts, others purely recruit. Varsity sports usually require a full year commitment. Club Sports play other colleges and universities, but are not part of NCAA or ACC, they request funding from student council, and practices and games are determined by club officers. Club sports may not require a full year commitment. Intramural Sports are competitive sports played at UVA among other members of the UVA community. Seasons usually last 3-8 weeks. No travel or practice is required.
Contracted Independent Organizations
All Club Sports represented are Contracted Independent Organizations at the University of Virginia. These CIO's are not agents, servants or employees of the University, but rather are independent contractors which manage their own affairs.
Club Sports membership may be determined by the Intramural-Recreational Sports facility usage policy. All participating club members must be full-time students, faculty, or staff. Approximately 2100 students, faculty, and staff currently participate in over 65 clubs at the University of Virginia. Club Sports membership must be 100% University affiliated.
If you are a club sport participant at UVA, and may be interested in participating in the same sport for the UVA Athletic Department, please note the following. Your participation on a club sport team will use one of your four seasons of NCAA eligibility in the related varsity sport. If you have additional questions about this, please contact the UVA Athletic Compliance Office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Each Club Sport CIO may be required to purchase liability insurance to cover the Club Sport CIO, its officers, and members with respect to claims by participants, spectators or others resulting from Club Sport CIO activities. Club Sport CIOs at the University of Virginia will fall into one of two tiers for the purpose of insurance requirements. These tiers are outlined below.
Tier 1 Club Sport CIOs are required to carry annual liability insurance for the current academic year. Club Sport CIOs fit into this tier if ANY of the following criteria are met:
- The Club Sport CIO holds multiple competitions, performances, or demonstrations on Grounds which involve participants from other institutions or entities.
- The Club Sport CIO holds multiple competitions, performances, or demonstrations on Grounds which involve invited participation by the general public.
Tier 2 Club Sport CIOs are strongly encouraged to carry annual liability insurance for the current academic year, but are not required to do so. Club Sport CIOs fit into this tier if NONE of the above criteria are met. Any Club Sport CIO fitting into this tier will still be required to carry event-specific liability insurance for any competition, performance, or demonstration held on Grounds which involves non-UVA participants.
All liability insurance certificates must include the following language:
- The User and any Co-Sponsor shall maintain liability coverage for premises operations with a minimum limit of liability of $1,000,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and property damage. The certificate of insurance shall name the following as an additional insured: “The Commonwealth of Virginia and The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia, its officers, employees and agents.”

Hazing refers to any activity that is expected or required of someone to join or maintain status within a group that humiliates, degrades, or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. Often, those participating in hazing practices consider them harmless pranks or comical antics – here at UVA, we take all forms of hazing seriously and work diligently to prevent it.
